Instructor:  Maria Willison

In this two-day workshop students will learn three different processes that they can easily replicate in their home or studio to create multiple editions of an object.  This is a great technique for an artist or hobbyist interested in using these skills for sculpture, restoration, food molds, cake decorating, soap making, and much more.

Students will learn how to create a small sculpture in clay, make a one-part mold of their sculpture, and then cast multiples using a variety of casting materials.  Students will sculpt 2-4  facial features of their choosing (an eye, a nose, a mouth, or an ear) from live models in oil clay. Then they will pick one of their sculptures to create a mold using Knead-a-Mold, a two part silicone mold making material.  After the mold has sufficiently cured, the students will learn how to cast a material in the mold. The students can choose to cast in Aqua Resin, soap, or chocolate.  The molds will last forever and can be used to make multiple castings.

This class will teach students fundamental tips and skills on how to sculpt facial features in three dimensions. This will help improve further sculpture endeavors and, if they are painters, will teach them how to see form better in three dimensions. Furthermore this workshop will teach students how to make simple molds and cast for other small projects they want to create on their own in the future.

There will be a 30 minute lunch break each day.  Feel free to bring your lunch to the studio if you wish.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Chattanooga based figurative sculptor, Maria Willison, enjoys creating work in the round and in relief with water and oil based clays. She found her true love of art while attending Covenant College for her Bachelor’s Degree (class of 2010). Maria has won several awards in competitions throughout the country and has shown her work at various locations including Brookgreen Gardens (Murrells Inlet, SC), the Gertrude Herbert Institute of Art (Augusta, GA), Hunter Museum of American Art (Chattanooga, TN), Old Courthouse Arts Center (Woodstock, IL),The Rose Center (Morristown, TN), Northshore Gallery of Contemporary Art (Chattanooga, TN), and The Association for the the Visual Arts (Chattanooga, TN). Also in 2016, and again in 2022, Maria was one of ten competitors selected to compete in the National Sculpture Society’s McDermott Miller Modeling Competition. When Maria is not creating her own pieces and commissions, she is working on donor recognition tile commissions which she took over from another artist who decided to pass the business onto Maria. She also enjoys teaching sculpture workshops and classes at Townsend Atelier.
