instructor: Carrie Pendergrass
All levels are welcome!
In this 5-day comprehensive printmaking bootcamp, you will learn a variety of printmaking techniques using Townsend’s own printing press, in addition to press-free printing. We will be exploring both modern and traditional techniques such as: botanical printing, collagraphy, linoleum relief, cyanotype, and more. You will learn whole processes from idea generation to plate-making, to ink application, and printing with both wet and dry paper methods. The possibilities are virtually endless! First-time printers and experienced artists are all welcome. All materials are included, except for specialty print paper, which can be purchased through the art store at Townsend Atelier.
(Other optional supplies to bring: pens & pencils, scissors, sketchbook, metal ruler, & list of potential found items will be sent after registration).
About the Instructor:
Chattanooga-born artist, Carrie Pendergrass, has been a visual artist, art educator, and art advocate/facilitator for over 25 years. Carrie holds a BFA degree in Studio Art with a concentration in Painting from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a visual art-focused MEd degree from the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. She has worked in both the non-profit and private sectors as an art teacher to all ages of children and adults. She has been a small business owner of her former handmade gift gallery and studio (initially as part of the River City grant program “Project Pop Up”) as well as a working artist. Her years at the nonprofit, H*Art Gallery, whose mission of “offering hope and opportunity through art” allowed her to work with many underserved populations in the community and spurred many Outsider and self-taught artists to sell their work. She left her job as Gallery Director there just before the pandemic to
concentrate on her art practice, and to pursue more freelance curating and
teaching opportunities. She has been recognized for her alternative printmaking work since 2017, with Honorable Mentions and juror’s prizes in 2017, 2021, & 2022 from the nationally recognized 4 Bridges Arts Festival. Her art can be seen locally and nationally in private and public collections, primarily in the Southeast. Outside of making her own work, she works as a freelance art educator, adjunct university art professor, and the director & curator of CHA ART SPACE, a free public art exhibit space at the Chattanooga Airport
that she established in 2021, as the recipient of an ArtsBuild Artists’ Work Grant.
You can find her at @sewntothesea and @cha_art_space on social media and through her website, sewntothesea.com.
