2023
April 28-30
10 am-5 pm EST @ Townsend Atelier
Instructor: Christopher Groves
This three-day workshop will focus on using oil, various mediums, and mixed media while working big! The workshop will begin with covering all aspects related to enlarging your paintings. Students will work from their own photo reference. All subjects are welcome. (Landscape, still life, figurative. etc) We will start with rigorous critiques on reference materials such as drawings, sketches, colors-notes, plein-air studies, and/or photographs to avoid many issues that may arise due to the bigger canvas size.
Composition will be heavily stressed as we learn how to manipulate a bigger canvas with lots of paint. A variety of bigger tools and diverse mediums will be covered to help the artists gain confidence in covering the canvas quickly.
In addition, various approaches to painting the semi-abstract will be covered throughout the 3 days which are designed to inspire exploration beyond the representational environment. Beginning with a series of mark-making exercises using graphite and
charcoal, the artists will further explore line, form, and pattern to create spatial relationships within a compositional structure. Color theory, design, visual and physical reaction, process, and individual taste will be covered in order to establish a ‘personal’ voice within the language of semi-abstraction. Students are asked to please bring any and all reference materials they may wish to paint on a larger scale.
There will be a one-hour lunch break each day. For those traveling out of town, please contact us if you need accommodation recommendations–we will be happy to help.
At the time of this posting (8.2022), masks are optional.
