In this three-day workshop, students will use paper and small objects to elevate the surface of their work, bringing in the fun of light, shadow, and three-dimensionality. You will spend the beginning of class making materials through methods of paper weaving, paper scales, folding, and more. Then, participants will use a penetrable but supportive substrate to evolve their piece, blending collage techniques and assemblage. Open to all skill levels. There will be a lunch break each day. Feel free to bring your lunch or enjoy plenty of dining options nearby.
Materials to Bring:
Pencil
Scissors (a smaller set is better for detail cutting)
Cutting knife such as an X-acto brand tool and extra blades
Low tack artist tape or masking tape (acid free)
Glue stick
Awl
**I will be providing a large assortment of paper materials and other materials for assemblage but please feel free to bring along any from your collection that you want to work with
Heavy watercolor substrate
Mylar
Vellum/tracing paper
Paint pens, paint, and other mark making tools
Brushes
Embroidery thread and needles
About the instructor:
Hollie Chastain is an artist and illustrator living and working in Chattanooga, Tennessee. After starting a career in graphic design, she moved back into studio work in 2007, choosing collage as a medium. Using mainly paper, she combines found images with modern colors and compositions to create work full of originality and narrative. Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections around the world with illustration clients including Warner Music, Smithsonian Magazine, Penguin Random House and the Oxford American.
