Whether you are a beginner or a professional artist, Townsend Atelier is a place where you will be allowed to learn, to experiment and to grow. We are dedicated to providing quality instruction in a wide variety of media to those who wish to advance their talents and interest in visual art. Taught by professional artists and art educators, we offer instruction in painting, drawing, sculpture, print making, mixed media, and a weekly open figure drawing studio. Our facility is located in the heart of the burgeoning Southside art district in Chattanooga, Tennessee. For students traveling from out of town, we are conveniently located near a variety of accommodations and dining options.

Come experience the beauty of silk painting firsthand in a two-day workshop. You will learn the basic techniques of silk painting and create practice samples and two wearable scarves.

This course is designed to introduce beginners to the practice of modeling the figure in clay, one of the primary traditions in the history of sculpture. A live model will be posed and observed as students model a clay sculpture during each weekly session.

5 Day Figure Painting Workshop with Casey Baugh

Learn Baugh’s method of figure and portrait painting in a 5-day master workshop.  The workshop will focus on creating a figure painting from the early stages of set up to the finishing strokes in both indoor and outdoor settings

Handmade Stamped & Stenciled Journals with Kari McKnight Holbrook

Sunday, April 30 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

This richly patterned journals pages explode with color and visual depth. The binding technique is especially for pages to lie flat when opened.  Students will use stencils and stamps in a unique layering technique to create our signatures and covers.

June 8, 9, & 10

Students will be encouraged to pick items that will enable them to develop their own personal narratives or meanings within these still life paintings.  This course will cover the essentials of oil painting from proper surface preparation to color mixing, with a primarily earth tone palette.

Portrait Sculpture Workshop | Instructed by Elizabeth Rogers

Saturday, June 2 & Sunday, June 3 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.

This class  will concentrate on a study of the head and its major features: eyes, ears, nose and mouth. Students will model a life size portrait busts in clay from the model. The student will gain an understanding of the form and structure of the head, its major planes and volumes, underlying skull and musculature and proportion of its features to the whole.

Introduction to Figure Drawing

Wednesday evenings February 1-March 7 | 6-8 p.m.

Working from a live unclothed model, this 6 week class is designed to help students obtain the basic skill of drawing the human form, including proportion, observation, and fundamental exercises in gesture, contour, outline, and tonal modeling.

Life Drawing | Open Studio

Ongoing, Thursday evenings & most Sunday afternoons

Open studios are non-instructed sessions with live models. A combination of short and long poses will be done. Participants may work at their own pace and with whatever medium they wish to work with.
